So as soon as the impact of the disaster was clear, the team of engineers, doctors, and resque equipment including special trained dogs to find people (about 60 man) take of by plane.
Of course they were not the only teams.
So coördination is very important.
We had the luck to have alot of equipment nearby cz. we have a Marinebasic in Curacao, with ships, planes and manpower.
The wellknowen organisations like RedCross and others send also goods and people to help and coördinate.
Besides saving people who survived they need water, food, medical care.
And in a longer term repair of the infrastructure and the buildings.
Because Haiti is a poor country they can use all the help they can get.
Problem is also money, to built it up again.
And if money isn’t no longer the problem cz. money will come from all over the world.
The biggest problem is to organize and to take care that the collected money will be used in the right way.
We all know that in poor countries corruption is the biggest enemy.
But that may never be reason not to help. cz. even when 50% will be used in the right way, it will better than nothing.
Here in Holland we had a big event yesterday from 06.00 till 24.00 on Radio all day and a big show in the evening on TV, where organisations, firms and private persons had the occasion to explain how- and why they collect the money.
At the end the gouvernement (they were also present in the show) doubled the amount. So, the colected amount of €.41.000.000,- doubled to €.82.000.000,-
They expect to spend the money as follows: 20% will be used in the first 2-4 weeks. ( resque, water, food, medical-care etc.)
50% will be used for food and shelters in the first years.
30% will be used to repair infrastructure and to rebuilt.
All will be coördinated by The United-Nations who will take care of distribution of the collected money in all countries. In cooperation with and control with the countries who made the donations.
So it looks like we have the best guarantee that the money will be used in the right way.
